My M,
What is it about the post-apocalyptic world that fascinates human kind? Is it wondering what comes after the destruction of the very fabric that binds us as a global society? Would social mores uphold? Anarchy ravage the streets? Without the persistent sprawl, would the world slowly transform into a verdant megalithic garden? Wild and untamable and no friend to the species, who through greed and blind self-entitlement set out to bleed the very life from the planet for their own furtherment. Perhaps we won’t see the return of any of our conjured vengeful gods. There is every possibility that we will end our own diseased crawl across the earth with the very things that crowned our kind among animals.
I love watching post-apocalyptic movies. I love that post-modern, tribal yet futuristic take on costuming. Practicality meets individuality – forging an identity for self against a backdrop of crumbling ideals and metropolises. Think Mad Max’s leather jacket, Waterworld’s world worn blanket-stitching and braids, Planet Terror’s machine gun replacement for an unfortunate amputation. All very cool, yet perennial.
I have found this a very inspiring place to start for Summer this year. Shredded and very loose layers on top, tight jeans zipped and holed, dresses languid and resigned, bags boxy and practical in shades worn proudly as spoils of hunting. Shoes – where to start. They have to be tough, feminine and up for anything. Something that says I mean business and I’ll show you without a second thought. There are two options – black or bright. Either take you far.
The post-apocalyptic world is a fitting inspiration for summer in Australia. When the temperatures start to climb, and everything appears arid and resigned – the imagination easily takes that next step to a post-apocalyptic landscape where humans eek out an existence from the wastage of ghost towns and wilderness. Below, I have created little vistas showcasing the latest offerings by Asos and Solestruck, that could easily translate into this kind of dressing. Also, I have included the latest from the Cambridge Satchel Company. I think even Wall-e could use one of these to carry about his fossicked treasures and curiosities.
The latest from Asos. Perfect for manouvering through an earthquake-divided landscape |
The latest from Solestruck. Useful for exploring dilapidated, overgrown buildings, and daydreaming the extravagent events this place would have played host to, in times of yore. |
The latest from the Cambridge Satchel Co. I have stubbornly decided that their Batchel would be the absolutely perfect travel handbag. Lovely and structured, yet big enough to accomodate all the necessities - magazines, novels, Nintendo DSI, drink bottle, moisturiser, eyedrops, medicine and of course Charlie the tiger. It would be a practical purchase! |
Take care dear, and keep squirrelling!
